Amex teams up with artists for new card designs

American Express is adding more art to its high-end Platinum cards, Bloomberg reported Thursday, January 20.

Platinum cardholders can now select drawings by artists Kehinde Wiley or Julie Mehretu, or they can choose one of the classic designs for their card, which costs $695 per year.

The report notes that lenders have focused more on the design aesthetics of their cards to set them apart, rather than the metals and materials that have been discussed in recent years.

Wiley has previously worked with Amex and is known for painting objects with botanical elements, as well as painting the official portrait of former President Barack Obama. Last year he worked on a “leafy design” for the bank’s Centurion card.

Amex said its new design for them “brings these plants straight to the Platinum board, beautifully capturing the essence of Wiley’s deep energy and worldview.”

Meanwhile, Mehretu’s designs emphasize an “abstract modernity”.

As Amex works to revamp its card rewards to attract new business after lulls in the pandemic, it said it wants to add a $200 hotel stay credit for its Platinum card. There will also be more opportunities for additional airport lounge access and private jet discounts.

Last month, Amex Digital Labs Vice President Luke Gebb told PYMNTS that he had seen how quickly COVID-19 had accelerated the digital transformation that was already happening before the pandemic.

Gebb said the technology needed to support digital payments has finally reached a point where it can securely and reliably support consistent digital payments, noting that the transition to digital payment comes with new financial features. which were simply not available before.

He added that digital payments now offer more form factors and features, including cryptocurrency, buy now, pay later (BNPL) services, and account-to-account (A2A) payments like Venmo and Zelle.
