How To Sell Greeting Card Designs | Small business

If you are a painter or graphic designer, you may be able to make money by selling your art or designs to a greeting card company. The company will use the design on the cards and either provide you with a one-time fee for the design or an amount based on the sale price of the card. You can also sell your greeting card designs online on print-to-order cards.

Consult a book such as “Artist’s Market” or another guide to find out which companies accept greeting card design submissions. The guide will explain what each company looks for in a design so you know if your artwork is a match. It will also tell you where to send your submissions and how much each company pays if they buy your designs or artwork.

Research greeting card companies online for their submission requirements if you can’t find them in a guide. Keep in mind that larger companies might not accept unsolicited submissions.

Load your creations on a CD to send them to companies. You can also print your designs and send them to companies. Do not send your only copy of a drawing or the original. It might get lost in the mail or a company might not return it.

Write a cover letter introducing yourself and your artwork or designs to the company. Include your contact details on the cover letter. If you would like to receive the CD or copies, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your cover letter. Put enough postage on the envelope to get your designs back to you.

Sign up for a website that lets you upload your designs to cards and other products and sell them directly to customers. If you want to start your own online store, you price your greeting cards based on the base price of the cards offered by the company. Set a fair price for customers to buy your cards.
